How About Some Twitter Rumblings

It is really interesting when you hear something from someone and it turns out to be true. Case in point, about two years ago I was participating in the Thirty Day Challenge put on by Ed Dale, Dan Raines and their crew every year.

This was about August ’07 and they usually start it off by giving you some tools to use that will assist you in the challenge. One of the tools that they recommended we should sign up for was a site called Twitter.

Any of you that have tried the challenge might remember that time. I am sure there were many like me that decided to sign up for Twitter but did not use it a lot. Probably we did not understand the potential. Sorry Ed.

Well let’s spring forward to just last year and all you heard people talking about was Twitter. It was Twitter this and Twitter that. It had become a phenomenon. If you did not Twitter you were not hip.

I know, I know, there are those of you that probably were way ahead of the curve when this Twitter first arrived on the scene. Come on you guys are always ahead on things like this.

As we move forward now we have Twitter tools, twhirl, we have Tweeple, Tweeps and a few other Twitter related terms.

It is quite the society and it is one of the biggest social networks. I get a kick out of reading the different things that people are twittering about. Some good stuff and some well…

Now you even have some Internet Marketers that have found you can get a following by getting involved and some are even able to sell some products on the site. I have no problem with that.

Now comes this new item that I see a lot of. Something called Twitter Getter. You can post on your site showing someone where they can get over 19,000 sign ups in 30 days. At first you might think like yeah, I want all of those followers for my site.

But wait, who are those people signing up to your site? Are they following you because they like what you have to say or because the thought that they might get an equal number of sign ups is so intriguing?

And that is my dilemna. Is this really ethical? And is it what Twitter was set up to do. Okay, I also want to tell you up front that I also signed up for this and I just want to say I did not inhale. Did I get a bunch of new sign ups. Yeah, I got a few but not what has been advertised, unless they all show up at the end of that 30 day period.

And another thing I want to know. Why are all of the “Guru’s” who already have a name signing up for this service and advertising? Are they not big enough that people will follw them because of their name? Inquiring minds want to know.

Just some rumblings from the New Breed Marketer. Would love to hear your thoughts on this matter. Leave a comment and tell me what you think about this.

  1. I signed up for it too, although I was really on the fence about it. I was just too curious. I may have gotten a few followers, but not enough to notice a difference from any other day. I thought well, if everyone begins following everyone, what kind of conversation will that be?
I think that the program benefited the few on the top of the list like some kind of mlm business.

Yeah Audrey, I would not go as far as calling it an mlm business but I could see why you might say that. I also have not gotten a big following from it.

  3. Well the real power in Twitter isn’t in numbers but relationships. Same as with your blog or any other social media it is the relationships you build with them that is the true value.

It’s interesting to see how much people flock to new things and start creating product/services for it. Twitter is still new, I’m not sure if I would want to spend the time and money creating a new service for it until it was a bit older.

So true Mike, I like that personal interaction that you can develop with your contacts. It makes it all so much more personal and enjoyable.

  6. Hi, Andre!

Twitter is a powerful animal, and a lot depends on how you want to use it. For true community-building, simply read and respond to as many tweets as you can help on, and that your available time allows.

For some, they want the large following so as to bolster their credentials elsewhere. For others, they just get carried away with how many they follow. But make no mistake – few read more than 20 or 30 ‘tweeple’ a day, so having 1,000′s of followers or following 1,000′s really means nothing.

It all comes down to how many people do you interact with on Twitter each day – that’s the only number that matters.

I have to concur with Mike and Doug. If you use Twitter to start up some relationships, it can be a real benefit…these people will start following you and as long as you are ‘tweeting’ a couple of times a day, some of these people will retweet you. Then when their followers see something from you, there is the potential to add another follower.

    Pretty interesting concept.

Great info. Keep up the good work.

  8. I agree with your comments about Twitter Getter.

As far as Twitter itself goes, I haven’t really figured it out yet. I do leave information there from time to time.

I am sure I miss a lot. With just the few followers that leave comments, the messages come across and are gone faster then I am able to keep up with.

    Hey Lonnie,

I am still learning a lot about it. I also don’t use it a lot but I am beginning to understand the power of it.
