Some Basics For An Internet Marketing Newbie

Some people at work know I dabble in the Internet Marketing field. I have been lucky enough to have made a little  money. Now, not enough that I could quit my J-O-B but enough to pay a few bills so I can dabble some more. But I see there is tremendous potential to make a lot more money on the internet so that is one of the reasons I stick with it.

But back to the people at work. Some of them are very curious about the internet. A lot still have fears but eventually curiosity will get the better of them and they will want to know more. So here are some basics for an Internet Marketing Newbie.

I tell them that it is a pretty good business to want to get in. It will require a bit of work but the payoffs can be pretty exciting. I know the first check I got as an affiliate marketer. I thought it was the best thing. And I was even fortunate to meet the marketer who’s product it was I sold and you better believe I was beaming with a smile.

So as they ask me what do they have to do to get started on the internet I give them a short list of things they will require:

1. A computer- yeah laugh it up. Kind of obvious. But you want a computer that will have a little power and speed. Above all I recommend  having Windows XP or later.

2. An internet connection preferably Broadband. This will be especially helpful for some of the programs you may have to download. It can be done with dial-up but boy you could be there a while.

3. An anti-virus program will be most helpful. There are a lot of free ones out the to choose from. I use AVG. They have a free and paid version and I have gotten by with the free one for a while.

4. A zip program will be important as you will get most of you products in the zip format. Winzip is a free option that I use.

5. Email will be very important as that will be a big way for you to communicate with people and them with you.

6. Productivity software – computer programs that help users complete task more efficiently. Microsoft Office comes to mind as one of the more familiar but Open Office does just as many things and it is free. Get it at OpenOffice.org.

7. A Paypal account would be recommended.

8. A credit card.

There are many other little things that you could get eventually but I think these are some of the essentials that will help you get started. Once you get an idea what the business is all about then you can decide if this is right for you and if you want to invest more. I will tell you that it is fun and exciting and something you ought to consider.

If you have ideas for other thing that could be added to this list feel free to leave a comment. As I said these are but a few of the requirements for getting started on the Internet.

I suppose those would be the basics of working online, but then there would be added things that they should consider, like a website, domain name, hosting, autoresponder, etc.

But these are things which are not needed right away, as it will probably take them time to simply learn about working online before actually doing any work.

  2. Great list Andre,

One other thing that I would recommend is an autoresponder. Now that may be getting a little ahead of the game, but one of the things that you need to start doing right away is building a list and you will need the autoresponder to do that and to manage the list you are building.

  3. Good list for getting started but there are two other things they must get web hosting and an autoresponder. Without those you don’t have a business.

I agree with and and most of the other commenters that an autoresponder is crucial. I just wanted to give them a taste of what it is all about for now. Thanks for the comments.

  5. Great start, Andre! Since most people considering the biz will have those already, or will have them shortly after starting, the next step I’d suggest is to get to one of the live events, like the JV Alert seminars.

The presentations through the day will give them a better understanding of the current state of the business, and each evening they’ll have a chance to rub shoulders and interact with those already making good money in the biz – good for both additional knowledge and motivation. And since most events are held on weekends, it doesn’t require time away from their current positions or schooling.

I can honestly say that if events like JV Alert Live seminars were around back when I was starting out online, it would have saved me a year or more of fumbling around with trial and error.

You know, you have really surprised me here with how basic you have got. If it were me I wouldn’t have even thought of some of these things, I just would have assumed people had the basics already.

Just shows how wrong you can be to assume!

    Hey Doug,

I totally agree. I had seen a little bit about Internet Marketing but it was not until I went to a seminar that I really understood the huge potential. And the people there were really helpful. I think it is a must do thing for us all to attend.

  8. I think you should be doing a follow up with stronger specific recommendations and costs.

You don’t want them to take a dial-up with their weird non-standard webhosting from bell south as part of their package (if such still consist).

Just add links to all recommendations,

    Fred

  9. Andre, A great first list of things that any one interested in getting started with an Internet Marketing should consider.

I agree with others that website, domain name, hosting, autoresponder, etc. should be added. So Fred has a good suggestion – it’s time for a follow up.

Thanks for providing some initial guidance for the newbie.

    Andre,

Some good points on the basics for starting out in the internet marketing business.

Another thing that I can add to this list is desire. Not only the desire to be successful, but the driving desire to make it successful enough to replace your current full time income.

    Keep up the good work!

    Ron
