What Is A Blog

A blog is basically a type of website, like a forum or a social bookmarking site.  It is basically a journal that is available on the web.  A blog is a medium of communication where you can post your thoughts and ideas regardless of what others think or say.  It is often a mixture of what is happening in a person’s life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.  A blog is what you make of it and is a kind of website whose content changes regularly.

Blog usage spread during 1999 and the years following, being further popularized by the near-simultaneous arrival of the first hosted blog tools: Bruce Ableson launched Open Diary in October 1998, which soon grew to thousands of online diaries.  Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.  They can be hosted by dedicated blog hosting services, or they can be run using blog software, or on regular web hosting services.  They often become more than a way to just communicate; they become a way to reflect on life, or works of art.

Blogging is a relatively low cost activity that will add value to your business for a long time to come, and in many cases blogging alone can push your business from obscurity to prosperity.  It also provides a wonderful opportunity for networking.  Think of it  as a very much an “of the moment” phenomenon, and while you might create “evergreen” content, it’s likely that at least some of your posts will be time sensitive.  It can be a way of collecting links to webpages and sharing thoughts and ideas with people online.

Most blogs have a method to allow visitors to leave comments.  The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs.  Comments let you know what’s working and what’s not, and inspire you to keep at it.  There’s no doubt about it; having comments enabled is likely to increase the popularity of your blog.  I firmly maintain that a blog without comments enabled is not a blog.  I find that comments are as much a way for your readers to interact with each other as with you, and not everyone wants to babysit a mini-forum.  A blog with comments has a different social dynamic from one without.

Having one is the best way for beginners to earn a decent living online as well as providing a useful source of information for others who need it, or are interested and want to find more about a certain topic you cover.  A blog is also a good way to keep track of articles on a site.  It is what you put into it.  A blog is essentially an online journal that everyone in the world is invited to read.  A blog is real, it is comprised of the human elements of the author/s in relation to their business and industry.

A blog is also a good way to create a money generating website that you can sell for a one time fee. The content attracts search engines and people will invest in something already created so they don’t have to do the work themselves.

If you do plan to flip your blog at some point in the future, be sure to make it with a generic name on a generic domain. It would be hard for me to sell a blog named Allen Davis’ Marketing Tips on the domain allendavis.com to anyone not named Allen Davis.

You can edit you About page to describe what the blog is about rather than have it about the author.

Great explanation Andre. Many times when people are just starting out online, they have no idea what a blog is, or why it’s different from other sites.
