Mike Paetzold back again for my last day of my visit here at New Breed Marketer as part of the Old Bald Guy’s Blog Tour.

This stop I am talking about WordPress and here is what has been covered so far…

So far this week we have covered a lot about using WordPress but the most important part of the equation is to understand what you are doing that is working and which things are not.

You really need to be tracking results. I use two different services to find these things out.

  • Google analytics
  • MyBlogLog

Google Analytics allows you to place a small piece of code on your pages and they will track and give you reports on the results. They track the people coming to your site and give you some good information on exactly where your visitors are coming from, how long they stay and if you set up goals they will even track that for you.

You can get daily visits, the keywords that were used to find you and which pages get the most visits.

The keywords that people used to find you can be very revealing and may show you topics you want to cover in more detail.

MyBlogLog is something that I use even more than Analytics. Now unlike Analytics there is a fee $25 a year per blog to get their full tracking service, It is well worth it.

There are a lot of other reasons to use MyBlogLog other than the tracking and I have blogged extensively about ways to use it to your advantage on my WordPress Made Easy blog. You can see a list of posts on MyBlogLog.

The reason I really like the tracking on MyBlogLog is that they will also show you which outgoing links are clicked.

Add in that they link to the exact search page (not just the keywords) that someone has entered your blog from and you can see exactly where you stand on that topic in the various search engines.

Knowing these topics that are getting you traffic and generating clicks of your links will allow you to go use things like Wonder Wheel to expand your information on that topic and strengthen your rankings.

Hope you have enjoyed my visit this week and stop to see me at my blogs. Next week I will be moving on to the Micro Business Specialist and will be discussing helping offline businesses with tips for those that are an offline business and those that want to help offline businesses take advantage of the internet.

Mike Paetzold back again for day 4 of my visit here at New Breed Marketer as part of the Old Bald Guy’s Blog Tour.

This stop I am talking about WordPress and here is what has been covered so far…

Today makes a great day to cover this topic because if you read the first post in this series you would know that it is Thanksgiving Day here in the US and I do not plan to write anything just eat and relax. Hope you are having a great holiday too.

That is because I created this whole series and just scheduled them on Sunday so I could have the week off to enjoy the holiday.

That being said there is always the time that you know your blog needs content and your brain is totally blank. Then you need to go find inspiration. I am usually good once I have a topic and that is one reason I am always asking my readers for their questions on the WordPress blog.

Here are 3 tools from Google you can use to find ideas and it does not hurt that they will usually be a hot topic too.

  • Google News
  • Google Insights
  • Google Wonder Wheel

Google News will let you find the latest news on your topic. Often times this is all you need to find that little germ of an idea for content. Just go there and add your topic and you will see all the latest news for it.

Google Insights will let you see what is hot on your topic. Add your topic and scroll to the bottom and you will see the topics getting increased searches. Like below for WordPress.

2009-11-23 0727

This shows me the top items being searched for but more importantly the items that are rapidly increasing in search volume.

Wonder Wheel is a relatively new addition to Google Search that will show you exactly what topics Google thinks are related to your main topic.

First you need to find the access to Wonder Wheel as it is not out in plain sight. Go to Google and do a search then click the show options on the left.

2009-11-23 0730

Then scroll down to standard view – Wonder Wheel

2009-11-23 0731

Once you click Wonder Wheel you will get a result that is a wagon wheel.

2009-11-23 0732

You can then click on any of the spokes to dig further for related topics. It is a great way to find related sub topics you might not have thought about. I click WordPress Themes and got this result.

2009-11-23 0733

You could continue digging down until you hit a topic that you wanted to write about today.

So there are three resources to help you answer the question of what do I blog about today?

Tomorrow we will discuss understanding what is working or not working so you can improve your results. Enjoy your Thanksgiving Day if you are in the US and have a great Thursday to everyone else.

Mike Paetzold back again for day 3 of my visit here at New Breed Marketer as part of the Old Bald Guy’s Blog Tour.

This stop I am talking about WordPress and here is what has been covered so far…

Today we will discuss making your blog more interactive. This will help you in 3 ways.

  • Pick up back links
  • New content
  • Keep it fresh

Let’s talk about Twitter first. Twitter has become a blogger’s best friend and there are numerous plugins that will allow you to integrate your blog with Twitter. I personally use Tweet My Blog which will automatically tweet each post I make to my Twitter followers automatically.

It will also allow me to integrate my last x number of tweets (you set the number) into my sidebar. This way every time I tweet anything when the spiders next visit there is new content on the blog even if I have not posted anything new on the blog.

Facebook allows you to add your Twitter feed to your Facebook page and this will create another backlink automatically when using Twitter automation from Facebook.

Friend Feed is the next item and again you can integrate it with your Twitter feed and your Facebook feed. Can you see how taking the time to integrate these will help you get back links and you can also attract followers to all of those sites at the same time.

All of those are great but the absolute best way to make your blog interactive is generating….

Comments

Comments create additional content and freshen your blog each time some one leaves one. Here are 2 plugins you can use to help reward your commenters and give them an additional reason to interact with you.

Do Follow – This removes the default no follow link that WordPress uses. You do bleed some PR but you get additional comments. The downside is that you need to moderate more and you need to let people know that you follow. I add a notice in my side bar to let people know that I do follow on my blogs.

Comment Luv – This will automatically go search for their latest blog post and link to it if they use a blog as their link when commenting on your blog.

Finally just ask for comments. I do that quite frequently on my blogs and while on tour I will be giving stuff away to one person on each blog I visit that comments and adds to the content.

Finally make it easy. Stay away from making people register to comment or run through a captcha form. This will kill the number of comments you get. Instead use a spam plugin like WP Spam Free that will eliminate most of the garbage right off the bat and moderate your comments.

So leave a comment below and tell me how I am doing this week as I visit here.

Mike Paetzold back again for day 2 of my visit here at New Breed Marketer as part of the Old Bald Guy’s Blog Tour.

This stop I am talking about WordPress and yesterday I covered…

Today we will cover 5 plugins that will make your WordPress blog more search engine friendly. Now there are lots of plugins you can choose from but these are the ones I have tested and use on all of my blogs. (And I have a few ;) .

All In One Bookmarking Button – It will place the social marker icon on the bottom of your posts and allow your visitors to easily bookmark your post at a number of sites of their choice. Any extra links you can get will help your rankings.

All In One SEO – This is a must have plugin as it allows you to add custom title tags to each post or will pick up your post title as the title tag instead of the main blog title as the title tag for each post as is the default in WordPress.

As your title tag is probably about 75% of your on page SEO this makes a huge difference in where you rank in the search engines.

Google XML Sitemap – Creates a compliant XML sitemap and pings Google and others (depending on your settings – Yahoo requires a signup and code) each time you post allowing the spiders to find all of your content.

Simple Tags – Allows you to customize your tags and create related posts which you can add to each post automatically based on your tags. This allows your visitor to easily find other content that is on topic making your site stickier.

WP Tags To Technorati – This plugin will make your tags compliant with Technorati the largest blog directory on line.

That gives you five ways to make your WordPress blog more search engine friendly. For more information on setting up your WordPress blog, making it SEO ready and generating traffic to it check out WordPress Made Easy. Everything you need in one place.

Hi all. Let me introduce myself, I am Mike Paetzold and I will be a guest here this week as part of my Old Bald Guy’s Blog Tour. This is stop 3 of 8 so you can keep following me across the internet as I go from blog to blog.

Some call me The WordPress Guy and that will be a primary topic this week in my posting. Today I will start off with 3 reasons why I use WordPress. There are actually a lot more than three but three is enough for one post after all I will be doing 4 more here after this ;) .

Reason #1 – WordPress is and can be extremely SEO friendly

Now what that means in layman’s terms is that Google loves WordPress blogs. If Google loves them they are likely to rank higher. If they rank higher then you get more traffic.

That last part is the real bottom line in that you can get more traffic with a blog than you can with static web pages easily. There are a lot of things built into the software that would take a lot more work to add to a static web site.

Reason #2 – Themes and plugins

WordPress is open source and there are any number of themes available to change the look of your site. Some are free, others are paid and there are a large number of designers that will create themes for WordPress.

Makes it really easy to change the look to match what you are doing.

Then add in plugins which allow the basic script to do other things. This can be a way to expand tagging, make it more SEO friendly, create pop ups, fight spammers or almost any other thing that you might want to add to your blog.

Really easy to increase the functionality and with themes and plugins you upload a file and activate it. Nice and simple, even for Old Bald Guy’s like me.

Reason #3 – Easy to schedule

This is a very important one for me while doing this blog tour. It is actually Sunday morning and I plan to create all 5 posts for this visit today. After all this is a holiday week here in the US as we will celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday.

Now I love to cook and bake along with eating so you can be sure that on Wednesday I will be busy making cheese cake and pumpkin pie for dessert on Thursday. On Thursday itself I will be eating more than I should, then watching the various football games and napping.

So by scheduling the posts there will be a post here each day even if I do not log in at all.

What’s coming this week

During the visit I will be discussing making WordPress more SEO friendly, more interactive, finding posting topics and finally understanding what is working so you can do more of that. Talk more tomorrow.

I am honored this week to be hosting Mike Paetzold, The Wordpress Guy, on my blog starting Monday, November 23rd. Mike has been blogging online since 2003 and developed quite a few niche blogs. He should be considered a Wordpress expert and his Wordpress Made Easy blog is an awesome site to get useful information for your blogging experience.

If you have ever been interested in going online and starting a blog you will find that Mike presents how it can be done in a nice, easy and pleasant style. After reading his blogs and blog post you will wonder why you have not started before now. And if you have ever tuned in to his Blog Talk Radio show you will realize this guy knows his stuff.

Earlier this year while thinking about how the recession has affected us all, Mike authored a book entitled, Blogging For Seniors. But don’t let the title fool you. Though written with seniors in mind, anyone could take these steps and get their own blog up and going.

I will be working on some new projects while Mike gives me a blow this week. Join me as he shares his unique style with a new audience. Welcome him and be sure to read what he has to say as it will help you with your blogging online.

Sometimes when you are trying to come up with an idea for a product it can be a frustrating experience. Maybe you don’t have the ability, confidence or time that it could take. Then another option for you is to have an ebook or report written for you by a ghostwriter, but that costs money that you might not have. Using PLR reports and ebooks could be an option.

Even though PLR reports and ebooks can be a cheaper option, you can not just stick your name on them with your for sale sign. Try making the following changes to create a great product you will be happy to sell and customers will be happy to buy.

1. Get Some new graphics done.
You would be surprised but people do remember when they have seen a product before. And once they have had a look at it they will realize it is the same PLR product other people are selling. No one wants to develop a reputation of selling the same PLR everyone else is selling. You want something that is unique to you. You want others to think of you as an awesome product creator who puts out quality products.

2. Add some extra value to the PLR report or ebook.
Just don’t think you can get away with just changing the title and graphics either. People will buy the product and figure out that they have bought this product before and it is exactly the same thing except for the cover and title. They might feel tricked and you had better believe that your reputation will take a beating. One important thing you can do with PLR is add value. Try explaining that bullet point in more detail, add some extra bullet points, add some extra examples or stories to illustrate your points, try adding some case studies, do a few screenshots and anything else that will give it a little more of your personality. You can come up with lots more information while changing things to fit your style.

3. Add some additional links.
What were your intial reasons for purchasing that PLR? You had some plans for it, right? That PLR report is not for just something to give away to your list, you can make it do double duty. Try adding some links in the body of it to promote products – yours or affiliates. Don’t just end it with a conclusion; point it to something else. For example, that report on puppies might end with an introduction to your dog training affiliate link or your dog training membership site. Look at the bigger picture, past the PLR you now hold in your virtual hands.

Many marketers are aware that PLR reports and ebooks are a great way to get started in internet marketing. It is quicker and easier to change PLR to fit your style instead of trying to create a product yourself. Many a guru got their start with PLR. They realize the power of PLR and some still use it as their successful business model.

So try these three changes; getting new graphics, adding value and adding your links. It will put you on your way to having your name on a product that is packed with value and it could help you change your financial future.

We are all experiencing the current economic climate. It is not a very pleasant site right now and you might think it is time to be bailing out of your carefully crafted marketing campaign and wait for the financial storm to pass. That would be a big mistake and you would have a lot of company as others do the same.

Though you would think these are troubled times and they are, they also create exceptional opportunities for smart marketers who understand the buying process. Especially if they can change the way they used to do business in better times. As you go through this, part of this marketing conversion could make use of a few tried-and-true offline marketing techniques.

As with any business plan you must develop a clear understanding of who your customer is: how they think and how they buy. This is not something new with business planning, it is as old as the days when peddlers rode through settlements with their wares in the back of the wagon over a hundred years ago. They had a waiting clientele as frontier housewives were desperate to get these products they would have hanging on the sides of their wagon. That simple premise of marketing to the prevailing needs worked then and still works today.

As you go through trying to sustain your business in a difficult economy, you must understand the stages of your customer’s buying habits. Your first step is to recognize the need for your product or service to solve a problem or to fill a need. Just by designing your campaign to capitalize on the solutions your customers need, this will help you make sales.

People have realized that when prospective buyers recognize their need for something, they will be looking for information before they decide to buy. It could be that they have needed this information in the past. Maybe they will replay a memory of that solution that either worked or didn’t work. They might make comparisons between the listed benefits of using current, competing products. If you present that marketing campaign showing customers with similar needs happily bought your solutions to their problems, using real and true testimonials, will bring you sales.

That mission accomplished and once your prospect has decided to buy, it is your job to make that buying process as easy as possible so they can buy and receive your product or service. You certainly do not want them jumping through nonsensical hoops to spend their money with you. Buying should be a 3-step process:

Step #1 – Click the “Buy Now” button
Step #2 – Landing on the Paypal or other payment processor page to enter their information
Step #3 – Receiving the download link or an attachment in the Thank you email

You might want to take a lesson from any retail store where you have made a purchase in the past. How many hurdles stand between you and the check-out counter? How long would you put up with ridiculous questions or requests for information or opinions on you way to pay for your purchases?

If you want to build a list and get permission to market to your buying customer in the future, you might send them to a squeeze page between Step #1 and #2, so you can get their email address, if you haven’t already gathered it on your sales page somewhere. If you are using a squeeze page, you might want to offer your buyer a free gift, like a special report or ebook just for being a customer. Free gifts build goodwill.

Always remember, customers come in all sizes, shapes and attitudes. What appeals to one customer and makes them reach for their credit card might not do a thing for another customer. To try and increase the interest in your products with customers holding different needs, think about including more than one list of benefits on your sales page or even have different sales pages, using keywords that will attract customers with opposite needs.

We go through these financial ups and downs all the time, some worse than others. The job for you, as a marketer in any market, is to understand your customers and what they need from you. After you have made that determination of their needs or wants, be sure to provide it. If you make your sales page full of enough benefits and testimonials to overcome their natural sales resistance, your business will grow in any market.
