Keyword Research Explained In Simple Terms

Chances are pretty good that you would not talk to a toddler the way you would talk to a teenager. Those toddlers would probably pay attention to you saying things like “Here’s a cookie”, while those teenagers would be in tune to listen if you said something like ” Here are the car keys.” And in that same thought you would not say something to your boss that you know your wife would like to hear. Well, I know I wouldn’t!

You could have the same thoughts about being online. It helps to use the right words, keywords, that you know will attract your buyers. And you want to be at the top of the pile so they can hear those words form you first.

Take a look at this 2 part process for finding keywords to use in your marketing, that is on your site and in your article marketing.

1. Get on over to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. This is the Google tool you’re going to use to explore different keyword phrases to find one that fits your parameters.

Where it says “Enter one keyword or phrase per line”, enter all the phrases you can think of surrounding a keyword:

stop dog barking
stop barking
stopping a barking dog
how to stop dog barking
barking dog
dog obedience barking
training my dog not to bark
how to train my dog not to bark
train a dog not to bark

Now the tool will give you the results of those phrases plus any other related phrases it thinks you might be interested in.

Let’s look at the Global Monthly Search Volume column results for those keyword phrases. We are not looking for keywords with the most number of searches, we’re going for the lower searches because you will have a much better chance of landing on Google’s first page with those phrases. We will be looking for global monthly search volumes in the 1500-2500 range. You can call those phrases “longtail keywords.”

Then you can click the “add” button for each phrase that fits the bill. you can continue searching if you come up with some more phrases and add them to your list. Take that list and save it to your computer as a text file.

2. Assess your competition for the keyword phrases.
I must stress to you there is more to assessing your competition, such as investigating each of the websites on page 1 of Google using your targeted phrase and determining their page rank, number of backlinks, exact text anchors used, etc. But what we really want to focus on in this article is the number of searches for your longtail keyword phrase. After we locate some good matches for #1 and #2, we can always explore further.

Now let’s return to Google and type each one of your phrases in quotes into the search engine. Then look at the number of search results in the upper right hand of the page. Of course you can try this with any parameters you want, but I generally look for a competition lower than 10,000.

Now you will want to check each one of your phrases that looked good in Step #1 and cross them off of the list if they don’t look good here in #2, And with the more searches there are and the fewer competition sites the better. And if ou keep at it sometimes you’ll find a real winner- a huge number of searches and very low competition!

This is not to say that this is the only way to search for good keywords. There are a multitude of different ways and everyone has their favorite method. This article was meant to give you an overall look at what keyword research is all about in a simple format. But you must remember it is not the only way of doing keyword research.

There are a number of paid versions of keyword research tools out there right now. They all have good points about them. I have found Micro Niche Finder to be a real favorite of mine at the current moment.

It offers the chance to really go in depth with research about a given niche and might show you some real gems of keywords out there. And the really good part I like about it is the continued research and updates they provide. It is a little hard to get use to at first. But with practice you will like as much as I do.

But, Micro Niche Finder even has videos to show you how it can be used. And oh yeah I also need to inform you that I am an affiliate of this product and if you purchase it and discover just how good it can be for you I will get a hard earned commission.

Developing A Business Mindset

A great many online marketers are not successful because they fail to know just what their business really is. Some of them write ebooks and short reports so they think they are in the ebook information business. And others that are software creators or marketers both believe they are in the software business. Neither could be further from the truth.

Some people may try to run their business but do not have a clear idea of what exactly that business happens to be. They are unable to write an accurate business plan, write compelling sales copy or build a loyal following. That pretty much means they have no business at all.

Always remember no matter what your product might be, your only business is still MARKETING. You could have an online business or a retail store in a mall. Your business is MARKETING. If you want to be a successful marketer you have to develop a marketing mindset. Most of us are not born with it.

I say most because I will swear that some of the people I know are born marketers. But the rest of us learned how to think like a marketer and to make those business decisions marketers need to make. It can take a lot of time and effort but it can be learned.

To get this process going you must first develop a marketer’s mindset, rather than a ebook sellers mindset, for example. Those of you that have been selling products on eBay or your own website, you have probably been consumed by finding interested niches, driving traffic, testing ads for conversion rates and building a list.

Nothing wrong with that and as important as those tasks are, you will still find they are from the standpoint of a sellers mindset and while you might make some sales with that mindset, your business will not grow to new heights.

Now we want to develop a powerful marketing mindset, so what you have to do is learn to focus on the one question that will govern every step you take online. Take all of your business decisions and look at them through this question: “How will this action provide true benefits and create loyalty among my customers?” If you find it hard to answer that question, maybe you need to go back to the drawing board and re-think your plan of action.

What you will find is with all the planing, designing, researching and testing that goes into a successful marketing campaign, the customer is actually in charge of your business. All of your success depends on a sale of your products or services and that is 100% dependent on your customer and THEIR needs.

As you develop a successful mindset it will become clear what are the motivations that make your customers buy from you. You will come to understand their wants and needs before you start to produce products for them. There are a number of forums and if you are a participant you can check out the different categories and see what are the problems, wants and needs of the members. Then you can focus on providing a solutions for them. That will be a ready made, customer driven market for your specific answers and solutions provided as a short report, longer e-book or services.

Marketing has always been about selling products to a constantly changing market made up of an anonymous customer who made a purchase and disappeared. Then you had to create another giant sale to bring that anonymous customer back to the store or service to make another purchase. Even then the customers were still anonymous.

But now, with today’s marketplace, the worldwide Internet, has demanded a shift from anonymous marketing to building personal, nurturing and longterm relationships with customers and that demands exceptional, over-the-top customer service, to start with.

Your customers need to build a personal, trusting relationship with you or they will not even open your emails and eventually will just unsubscribe. Click…Gone!

There once was a time of an Internet of slick quickly built, simple web pages promoting products to an anonymous audience but it no longer exists. The new marketing principles are based on a social web, with people interacting directly with each other and mega businesses. You must be able to have open discussions and provide honest answers to become the driving force behind any online relationship.

You want to make sure that those relationships are dynamic, vital and dependent on the customer’s behavior, attitudes and interests. Now, that single customer in some small town, way out in the country somewhere, can reach out and grab the attention of a mega company on the other side of the planet and have an effect on their customer service or the products they provide.

Boy, I bet you never looked at it from that perspective? You might want to think about that!

What Are The Makings Of A Good Title

We have come to know that the Internet is full of information, both old and new, so much so that people have become rapid scanners when looking for products and information. That points to the fact that your sales page title needs to be outstanding and compelling enough to force a click on your link to find out what you have to offer. so, you can see that the headlines or titles on your blogs and ebooks are no different.

There has always been some confusion between the meanings of “title” and “headline.” They both mean the same and their use is dependent on the media they are found in. The word “title” is most often used online for blogs and websites, while magazines and newspapers use “headline” more often than not.

You could look at your title as having two jobs. If you do not get either of these right you will not be noticed on any search engine. First, you must grab the viewers eyeballs and force them to read on. And you can bet boring titles will not do this. You will have to tickle the viewers curiosity before they scan on by your link in about 8 seconds or less.

Next, you will want to make the search engine’s indexing robots happy with your title and your content. That will involve using keywords both in the title and in the content of the webpage, article or blog. I can’t say for sure but rumor has it that titles unrelated to the content get the article or website sent to Google Hell.

You might think that most good titles are written for the search engines and their spiders, but they have to attract your viewers also. And that is one of the big differences. People and search engine spiders do not see titles in the same way. Spiders, or indexing robots, scoop up your keywords, titles, subheadings and content and dump it on the main search engines. Your titles will be used as reference points for your listing and to check the content’s relevance to the title.

As your viewers are making the decision to click on your title or not, they may be hesitant until they see the terms they were searching for in the first place, your related keywords, Be sure not to make the mistake of writing a title that is all hype, like late-night television ads. Instead, think about highlighting benefits and answer the emotional, underlying question that governs most buying decisions, “What’s In It For Me?”

Make your titles larger than the copy font. Also, use a bold, colorful font and highlight the major benefits you are trying to point out, just remember to keep it simple and and easy to read. The same can be done with your subheadings inside your copy so that your main points stand out before viewers that may be scanning the page and prefer not to read every sentence or paragraph. Bold, black subheads, with a touch of yellow highlighted background will grab the eyes of anyone scanning the page. Just try not to overdo it or you will lose the effectiveness.

Try to stay away from using special characters in your titles, like &, #. @ and *, though using % would be useful if you are using a statistic in the title. You might think that that shorthand is understood by everyone, you will find that all it will do is confuse the search engine robots and waste your time. Of course, a $ works when you are talking about money.

Your title should be about you article content. The big bad Google will not take it lightly if your titles do not reflect your article’s content and some, if not most, article directories will look at you as trying to use deceptive practices with their readers and will not approve your article. Your readers are wanting information they are searching for. If they should somehow come to your link thinking this is what they were looking for and find out it isn’t what they wanted, they will click off your site without waiting the usual 8 seconds.

A really good thing for you to do would be to add some keywords to your title. Just make sure that it will read natural for someone looking at your statement. You certainly don’t want to copy one of those eBay auction titles where they repeat a keyword over and over to attract bids. with lots of stars and dollar signs. If you are not presenting a title that sounds professional and clearly states what you are presenting in the sales page or article, none of your customers will take you seriously.

Why not try these techniques to keep your viewers clicking on your links. Go ahead and make your title believable and not overstated and hyped up enough to put people off. Would you want to click on this title link: “Make $1,000,000 This Weekend While You Are On The Golf Course!” I think not!

In some cases more is not always better. Use only as many as you need t make your point. People tend to brush off or ignore extra long titles. By using no more than about 10-12 words for your title, you will find that both the directories and the search engines will be happy with your title. Most directories will end up cutting off extra long titles which could include your keywords and search engines usually have a character cut-off limit.

You might find it helpful to use some emotion in your titles. According to some research, it has been shown that titles with some emotional ties to your viewers will attract more interest than hose with out any. Remember you do not have much time before your viewers hit their mouse button and move on to something else. Try asking questions with emotional triggers, it could help your success rate. Is Change Good For Your Business?

I was taking with a marketer friend the other day and he was telling me about one of his sites he was trying to change. He was trying to move his subscribers over to another website and domain where he could be a little more functional.

His new site really looked good and it offered a host of new things that his members would be able to do. But the problem was there were a lot of people still heading over to his old site. And he was actually still getting sign ups there.

As we were talking about this he mentioned that it was hard for people to change. I had to actually think about that because it is so true. When people get use to doing things one way they fall into a routine and it just becomes second nature to them. So, when you ask them to change it can be catastrophic.

Has that happened to you in your business? Just when you have your subscribers, customers or your list doing one thing you decide that you want to change. Now you are generally doing it to help you and them but maybe you have not explained it to them in the right way. Or you did but they did not hear it as being helpful to them.

I know myself that if I have something that is working well I find it hard to change it. Again it could be for the better but that resistance is still there. I have to check my boold sugar and my doctor gave me a new meter because the on I had was a few years old. So now I have to learn a different meter. Now they both will do the same thing but one is newer. Just adds a little anxiety.

Kind of like my last post where I talk about the WordPress update.I always want to ask why don’t they just leave it alone. Of course I already know the answer.

Step back and re-evaluate what you are doing. maybe try mapping it out as to why and how you are going to do it. Maybe make a couple of columns on a sheet of paper. You might label them as positives and negatives of what you want to do. Take a look at it from their perspective. It might help you to understand that you are not doing anything wrong it just takes time for people to react to change.

Is change good for your business? It probably can be but it must be done in the right way. look at it from the customers side and see just how much they will be affected. it probably will turn out to be the right move if done properly. And it will cause less confusion and headaches for you and them.

Another WordPress Update, WordPress 2.8.5

If you have a WordPress blog I am sure you have seen that another WordPress update is upon us. So, WordPress has just issued a new update from 2.8.4 to 2.8.5. Boy, don’t you just get sick and tired of all of these updates. And can’t they just put them all together and do them at one time.

Now, I must admit when the latest round of updates started coming out I was a little annoyed. After all who wouldn’t be. They seem to come out here as of late about once or even twice a week!

But a good friend and fellow blogger let me know just how important these updates really are. And how for every update that is done for our protection it might create another problem that needs to be fixed. Wow, it seems like a never ending cycle.

What you may not know is that there are people out there that have nothing better to do than trying to infiltrate your blogs or my blogs. I don’t know, maybe they have nothing better to do. I would like to also think that they are jealous of not being able to sustain their own blog so they want to make sure that everyone else is as miserable as they are.

Hey I don’t know. But I am glad that WordPress is constantly trying to stay on top of the game and they are trying to keep us safe. It may not work out that way sometime but at least they are trying and I think that is very important.

Now I am still trying to figure out just what was fixed but it must be important. My friend, Mike Paetzold, alias the WordPress Guy or as he calls himself, “The Old Bald Guy”, has a video showing how you should back up your blog before you update and he gives you instructions.

Have a look at this video and be sure you back up your blog before you try the update. And be sure to stop by and check out the blog for Mike Paetzold. He puts out some useful information that will help you out with blogging and WordPress blogs.

This video was originally done when WordPress updated to 2.7.1 but it is still applicable for now. Here is the video:

Have You Thought About Your Affiliate Tools Needs?

When you are thinking of launching a product, there are many things that you have to do and decisions that have to be made. One question you should have on your list is, should I have an affiliate program? Just by answering yes, you will be happy with your decision and think you are good to go. But before you start celebrating, remember you are not ready to launch your product yet. You should set up some tools for your affiliates before you start asking them to sign up.

Having affiliates is a great way to sell more products, but you can be sure that some affiliates want and expect a little help. There is more to an affiliate program than just doing the techy work and making sure the affiliate splits are correct. Make sure you have an affiliate page with tools to help them sell your product.

You might think it is a time consuming process, you are trying to get your product launched and don’t feel like you have time for it, but having tools available will help them, and you, make more money.

By offering an assortment of tools for your affiliates, they can pick and choose which ones they want to use, based on their style of affiliate marketing. Some affiliates might want keyword suggestions and others might love pixel banners. Cater to everyone and let them use their favorite marketing methods.

Not really sure what your affiliate tools page should look like? Why not take a look at what other marketers do. Watch out for how they set up their page. This page not only includes tools, but it’s a bit of a sales page itself telling or reminding people who visit why they should become your affiliate. You might even see some with a table on the page that shows how much you can make in a month if you make, say, 5 sales a day.

How does their affiliate page look? Do they look like they care? Is there ongoing support for affiliates? Is there possibly an affiliate manager or an affiliate blog or forum that’s designed to help affiliates succeed? And what else do they offer?

Try this list for things you might have in your toolbox:

ads in different shapes and sizes
keywords
auto link changer
link cloaker
articles
emails
blog posts
autoresponder series
product review posts
free reports
brandable PDFs
ebook covers
banners
testimonials
text links
signature links
video product reviews
video interviews

You may not need to include all of these things, especially if you are launching your first product, but it would not be bad to include some of them. This is just a list to get those creative juices flowing for you, to think about what you could offer to help your affiliates make sales.

It is always helpful to have a pretty good array of promotional materials if you plan on asking some big names to sell to their lists. You can bet they want and expect to see items such as promotional emails they can fine tune and send out. Make it as easy as possible for them. After all they could be doing something else.

You also might try having instructions on your affiliate page telling new affiliates what to do and the order to do it in. You just can’t assume you are working with the big dogs who already know, there will be beginners joining your team as well. Remember when you had to learn this stuff?

You could use this example for numbering your steps:

1. Get yourself a Clickbank ID here.
2. Here is what you can do with the tools (and this to your blog, email this to your list, set up a lens with this, etc.)
3. Now download these promo tools.
4. Sign up to this affiliates list for further updates.

So, in conclusion, you will want to have at least a few promotional items for your affiliates to use. Of course you may think this is to much work as you get ready to launch your product, But end the end it will be a big help to your affiliates and ultimately yourself.

Living The Internet Marketing Lifestyle

Looming around every corner in every country, you will find a shy marketer wannabe with a huge desire to make money on the Internet. But they have no idea of how to do that or what they want to do. Most have been surrounded by the constant marketing hype that keeps circling the web: “You can make thousands of dollars every day with no work at all.”

Now just think about that hype for a minute. The real plain truth is that business is business, regardless of the method you use to do it. You can have a retail store or service bureau online or offline. You can sell anything you want to sell either way if you can find a market for your products or services.

It can be very hard for a newbie in Internet Marketing. Most will fail without making much money, if any at all because they forgot or didn’t even know the very basic, critical requirements behind every business. To get started you have to have a plan. Several plans, in fact.

I will bet you no businessman since the beginning of time ever just found an empty stall or storefront and opened up a business two hours later.

You might want to try and complete these four steps if you ever want to try living the Internet marketing lifestyle and having just a slim chance of making a living online.

1…Choose your product.

Specifically, what do you want to sell? Physical products on eBay or virtual products, like ebooks? This first choice is very important to your future success. For example, your product has to have a hungry audience just waiting for its arrival before they will dig out their wallets.

Usually you hear or have read that you have to sell what you are passionate about. Now think about that carefully. You may be passionate about British Racing Green thumb screws, but you’re probably not going to sell any, unless you can locate a large number of active torture chambers in need of supplies.

Why not make yourself a list of your interests and then select your favorite one to start with. Then you can research the size of your potential market with Google or with keyword tools that will tell you the exact terms people are searching for and how many searches there are for a month. That is an easy way to find out the interest for your product and if anyone wants it. No Interest = No Sales!

2…Decide who you are going to sell to.

You have many choices and you have to choose a market that promises the most interest from people who buy products like yours. Even offline you’d have to rent a storefront where your natural market would frequent or they would never find you.

One way to make these decisions is to go where your market is, like forums and membership sites focused on your topic. Join the forums and become an active member by asking questions and providing answers to others questions. Every question asked by somebody probably has hundreds of others looking for your answers. That’s your market.

3…Select where you are going to get your products.

You can buy virtual products, ebooks, ecourses, software or scripts with rights that allow you to resell them and keep the profits. You can also buy products that come with Private Label Rights (PLR), that you can claim as your own or redo to suit your market.

Go ahead and create your own products and keep all of the profits for yourself. A great many marketers have made a good living doing just that. They either write their own products or hire a ghostwriter or freelancer to do it for them.

4…Decide how you are going to market and sell products.

Why not try selling them through an online website that you either create yourself or outsource. This process will include the sales letter (website), an opt-in page so you can collect email addresses and permission to market to them and an autoresponder service to send your messages automatically to your opt-ins. This is where you will begin spending a little money. You will need some start up capital, so you can forget about doing it for free.

If you plan on making professional money, you need both professional tools and marketing techniques. Some will cost you some money but not serious cash. You can start a business savings account, even if it’s just stuffing some dollars in an empty coffee can, you have to start somewhere. When you finally get all your choices and materials lined up, you will need to start putting your dream online.

Starting to make a living on the Internet in not expensive and eventually with some hard work you may start living the Internet marketing lifestyle. You might have to give up a few pizzas, but it will be worth it.

Try Becoming A Ghostwriter With These 5 Tips

There seems to be more advice online than any human can digest about writing articles and starting a viral marketing campaign to drive traffic to your site. There are so many details that you have to monitor when you are setting up websites or running several blogs, just doing the task of writing your own articles can be a bit overwhelming.

Trying to get that Google ranking will require constant fresh new content on both your blogs and your websites. Visitors to your websites want to read new content or get new information and your job is to provide it or you will lose the customer. An often stated Internet statistic is that you have a few seconds to capture a visitor’s attention or lose them forever. And stale content will definitely hurt you.

Try these 5 tips to get your site seen more often:

Tip #1… Do What The Guru’s Do… Outsource

Quite a few of the Internet “Gurus” have several dozen websites or more, online at any time. So you can imagine that those websites need new content all the time. Now, you don’t really believe that they run their empire, drive traffic, keep customers happy, find new markets and niches, research keywords and write all of their own articles. They hire a ghostwriter to do the writing for them.

There are several very good benefits for starting your own ghostwriting business online. The number one reason would have to be being your own boss, with no daily commute, setting your own schedule and not having to “Dress For Success” everyday. Others include working with successful internet marketers, learning as you go from researching their subjects before you write a word and developing your own style and mind set.

Tip #2… Check Your Spelling And Grammar

Your clients will expect perfect spelling and good grammar. If this is a big challenge for you, you might want to consider another career. It doesn’t matter if your client can’t spell and has never heard of punctuation, you ae being paid to provide a quality product. Find a proofreader and never send anything to a client without having your final copies checked out completely.

Tip #3… Learn to Ask Questions Before Quoting Fees

When potential clients want quotes for your services, they are often vague about just what they want. If you are not rock solid sure about their needs before you quote, you will be writing yourself into a financial hole.

Be sure to write up a set of questions that you will need to know about anyone’s project before setting prices. Once you quote and it is accepted, you are obligated to do the job for that price.

Some things you might want to put on your list include what the product is (article, ebook, short report, ecourse, etc), when the finished product is due, how many pages or words, will it be a PLR rewrite or original product, who does the research and what tone do they want, friendly or technical?

If you come up with additional questions, ask them and do not quote until you get all the answers you need. If the job turns out to be more than you expected, do it anyway and learn to ask better questions for the next job.

Tip #4… Develop World-Class Customer Service

Just the way you treat your clients will be your most important skill that will keep them returning again and again. Impeccable customer service is easy to accomplish with a little forethought. Basically, do what you say you will do and over deliver. That means get it finished a little ahead of time or add a couple of extra pages and keep your client informed until you ae finished with the writing job.

Be sure to answer all questions your client might ask as the project goes on. Never forget that while you might be writing it, the project is theirs. If you stay in touch and hit a problem or unexpected delay, a direct explanation to your client will normally result in an extension of the due date.

Tip #5… Finding Clients

When you are starting your ghostwriting business, your hardest task will be finding clients. Your direct competition will be websites with a stable of freelance writers. Some clients want to work for a long time with one ghostwriter, establishing a long-term relationship. Others do not want to put their projects out for bids. That’s your market!

When trying to build your own set of clients, join forums based on niches you are interested in or forums for very popular topics, like making money online. Be a good forum member by answering people’s questions when you can and providing good links to resources that might be interesting to the rest of the forum. Create a signature that advertises your services and includes a contact link. if you are unsure about this, start reading the signatures for other forum members and learn.

You should include your signature in every email you send to anyone, even your mother. When people ask you about your services, be polite and honest and answer honestly and directly. Your business will slowly build around you. This is not an easy business with a lot of competition. You may work hard in the beginning but it will get better. Don’t forget to have a good time.
